Every year, before the season, the IPL holds an auction. Franchises gather to bid for players, and the results shape the whole season. It is one of the most watched events in cricket, even though no ball is bowled.
Why an auction?
The IPL is designed so that teams are balanced. Instead of letting the richest team sign everyone, an auction gives each franchise the same budget to build a squad. It means that good players spread across the league, and no team can simply buy a dominant side.
The purse
Each franchise has a fixed amount of money, called the purse, that it can spend on players. The figure is set by the league and changes from time to time. A team must fill its squad within its purse, so every decision has a cost.
Retention
Before the auction, teams can keep some players from the previous season. These are called retentions. Retaining a player usually counts against the purse, so teams have to decide whom they most want to keep.
Retention lets teams build around a core group of players, which helps give each franchise a stable identity.
How the bidding works
Players are put forward one by one, each with a base price set by the player or the league. Franchises raise their paddles to bid. The price rises in steps until only one team is left, and the player goes to that team.
If no franchise bids, the player goes unsold, though they may be brought back later in the process.
Capped and uncapped players
Players are categorised as capped, if they have played for their country, or uncapped, if they have not. Uncapped players often have lower base prices, and the auction is a major chance for young talents to be noticed.
Overseas limits
Teams can field only a limited number of overseas players in the starting eleven. This forces franchises to keep a balance between local and foreign talent, and to find good Indian players for key roles.
The drama of the room
The auction has become a show in itself. Fans follow every bid, and the surprise of a record price or an unexpected pickup is a major talking point. Behind the drama is a lot of planning, with analysts, coaches and owners working on strategies for months.
What to remember
An auction is about strategy as much as money. A team that spends well, finds hidden value and balances its squad has a better chance of winning. It is one of the things that makes the IPL special.
