A Beginner’s Guide to Watching Pro Kabaddi

What to look for in a professional kabaddi match, from the scoreboard to the tactics.

Pro Kabaddi is fast, loud and easy to love. If you are watching your first match, a few simple tips will make it even better.

Start with the scoreboard

The scoreboard shows the points, the time left and the number of players on the mat for each team. Keep an eye on the player count, because it tells you how close a team is to being all out.

Watch the raider

Each raid is a mini story. The raider enters, eyes the defenders and looks for a gap. Some move slowly and tease the defence, while others rush in and out. Learn the raiders’ styles, and you will start to predict their moves.

Watch the defenders

Defenders work in formations. The corners guard the sides of the mat, and the covers stand beside them. The centre players hold the middle. When they join hands, they form a chain that is hard to break. Watch how they move as one.

Understand the clock

A raid lasts only 30 seconds, and the match clock keeps running. Close to the end of a half, teams often change tactics. A team that is leading may slow things down, while a team that is behind may take bigger risks.

Notice the do-or-die

After two empty raids, a team must score on the third. It is one of the most tense moments in the sport. The raider knows they must score, and the defenders know it too. Expect high drama.

Look for the super plays

A super raid, where a raider scores three or more points, can change the match. A super tackle, made when the defence has few players, can swing it back. Watch the crowd, because the noise tells you when something big has happened.

Get to know the teams

Each team has its own style and its own fans. Some are built around a star raider. Others have a powerful defence. Pick a team to follow, and you will get to know the players quickly.

Enjoy the atmosphere

Pro Kabaddi matches are about more than the game. The arenas are bright and loud, with music, chants and a lively crowd. The energy helps make each match feel like an event.

Learn as you watch

Do not worry if you miss a rule or a name. Even regular fans learn new things every season. Enjoy the speed, the skill and the drama, and the details will fall into place.
