Every cricket fan has an all-time Test XI, and no two are the same. Building one is a joyful argument, and half the fun is defending your picks. Here is ours, with the reasoning, and the full expectation that you will disagree.
The openers
Sunil Gavaskar was the first great Indian opener, a master of technique against the fiercest pace attacks without a helmet. Beside him, Virender Sehwag was the opposite, a batter who attacked from ball one and made the best bowlers in the world look ordinary. Together they give the top order balance between defence and destruction.
The middle order
At three, Rahul Dravid, the Wall. His patience and technique saved matches again and again. At four, Sachin Tendulkar, whose career spanned over two decades and who carried a nation’s hopes. At five, Virat Kohli, a fierce competitor who set new standards for fitness and intensity in the modern Indian team.
At six, V.V.S. Laxman, who delivered some of the greatest innings under pressure, most famously a partnership with Dravid at Kolkata against Australia in 2001.
The all-rounder and the keeper
Kapil Dev gets the all-rounder’s spot, a fast bowler who could also hit big and who led India to the 1983 World Cup. For wicketkeeper, the choice is hard. M.S. Dhoni brought leadership and calm, while others have brought batting brilliance. Our pick goes to Dhoni for the way he shaped a generation.
The bowlers
Spin comes from Anil Kumble, the leading wicket-taker, and Ravichandran Ashwin, a thinker and match-winner. Pace comes from Jasprit Bumrah, whose skill and control have made him a standout of the modern age.
Who missed out
The hardest part is leaving people out. Bishan Singh Bedi, Zaheer Khan, Harbhajan Singh, Ravindra Jadeja, Rishabh Pant, Sourav Ganguly, Rohit Sharma, and many more could be argued into the side. Any of them would be worth a debate.
Why we love the argument
This kind of list is not about a final answer. It is a way of celebrating the players who gave us memories, and a reminder of how deep Indian cricket’s history is. Every era had its heroes, and every fan has a favourite.
So tell us who you would pick, and who you would drop. The best part of the argument is that it never ends.
