A Newcomer’s Guide to the Indian Super League

The clubs, the format and the culture of India's top football league, explained for first-time viewers.

If you are new to Indian football, the Indian Super League is the best place to start. It is fast, colourful and full of character, and it has become the main stage for the country’s top clubs. Here is what you need to know.

What it is

The Indian Super League, usually shortened to ISL, launched in 2014. It is a franchise-based league, with teams representing cities and regions across India. It brought a new style of presentation to Indian football, with television coverage, big stadiums and a festival atmosphere.

How it is organised

The league is played over a season, with each team facing the others at home and away. Teams earn three points for a win, one for a draw and none for a defeat. After the league phase, the top teams enter a knockout stage to decide the champion.

The exact structure of the competition has changed over the years, so check the rules for the current season.

The clubs

The ISL features a mix of clubs with different histories. Some, like Mohun Bagan Super Giant and East Bengal, have roots stretching back more than a century. Others, like Kerala Blasters and Bengaluru FC, grew up in the modern era and built loyal followings fast.

Every club has its own colours and its own identity, and many of them have passionate supporter groups who fill the stands with drums, flags and chants.

The players

Each squad is made up of Indian players and a limited number of overseas signings. This creates a mix of local talent and international experience. Young Indian players get a chance to learn from foreign stars, and fans get to see a variety of playing styles.

The rivalries

Some of the biggest matches are derbies. The Kolkata derby between Mohun Bagan and East Bengal is one of the oldest and most intense rivalries in Indian sport. In the south, Kerala Blasters and Bengaluru FC have built a spirited rivalry of their own.

What to look for

If you are watching your first match, focus on a few things. How does each team try to build attacks? Who are the key players in midfield? How do the goalkeepers handle pressure? Notice the noise of the crowd, too, because the atmosphere is part of what makes the league special.

How to follow along

The easiest way to get into the league is to pick a team and follow them for a few matches. Learn the players, track their progress, and enjoy the highs and lows. Soon enough you will have a favourite.

The ISL is still a young league, but it has already given Indian football a new platform. For a newcomer, there has never been a better time to start watching.
