The Indian Premier League, or IPL, is a professional Twenty20 cricket league played in India every year. Eight to ten franchise teams, each representing a city or region, compete over about two months. It is one of the most watched and most talked about sporting events in the country.
The basic idea
Each team is owned by a business or an individual, and built by choosing players through an auction. Squads mix Indian internationals, young domestic players and overseas stars. Because the players come together for the season, a team can feature a Test captain, a young fast bowler from a small town and a world-famous overseas batter in the same eleven.
A franchise league
The IPL works like many professional sports leagues. Teams have names, colours and identities, and fans pick a side to support. Unlike international cricket, where fans support their country, IPL fans support a team from their own city or one they have grown to love.
Why it became so big
The format is part of the reason. T20 matches last about three hours, which fits into an evening. The fast-paced cricket is full of big hits, and the excitement builds until the final ball.
The setting matters too. Colourful stadiums, music, cheerleaders and a festival atmosphere give each match the feel of an event rather than just a game.
The stage for talent
For young cricketers, the IPL is a big opportunity. It gives them a chance to play alongside the best in the world, learn from their coaches and test themselves under pressure. Many of India’s current international players first caught the eye of selectors in the league.
The business side
The IPL changed the economics of cricket. Television rights, sponsors and ticket sales bring in large sums. Players are paid well, and the league has helped create careers in cricket that were not possible before.
What to expect as a new fan
If you are watching your first season, start by choosing a team. Learn a few of its key players, and follow their matches. Do not worry about knowing every rule. The fun of the IPL is in the moments, the big sixes, the last-over finishes and the stories of players finding their form.
